GET WORKED HARD

Digital prints on steel, film (9min), sound (3min).

GET WORKED HARD consisted of a 9 minute film projected on loop, a 3 minute looped sound piece played through speakers, and a set of folded and rolled steel sculptures with images digitally printed on them.  The work stemmed from my time spent at the Port of Rotterdam, learning about the transit points and the truck drivers who act as mediators within the global transit of commodities. The port is a space of exchange and transaction, it’s synchronised choreography fuels the commercial world. This work draws a focus on the individuals who work in essential services that are often invisible to us: the truck drivers are significant because they embody a fragment of this infrastructural machine.  The film features shots of snaking chains of trucks carrying containers, across vast networks of roads. The footage is almost entirely devoid of the body, but one shot of a winking truck driver. The sound piece consisted of field recordings of the port and it’s machinery alongside a reciting of Google reviews of port transit companies written by truck drivers. Digitially printed and folded steel sculptures display collages of physical infrastructures around Rotterdam and it’s port.
